Conisbrough Castle.
Conisbrough Castle used to be the main
stronghold of the De Warenne the Earl of Surrey, who held the land of the area
from 1069-1347. The early castle will have been made from wood and it wasnt
until 1180 that the Keep as it is today was built. In the late 1400s
the castle stopped being used and fell into a state of disrepair, possibly
the fact it wasnt being used saved the keep from being knocked down in the civil
war (1642-45) when most castles were destroyed. It was left as being of no importance.
This was to save the keep and make it into one of the best preserved keeps in all
Europe.
